Work hard, then ... spend wisely

Rowena Ryan | July 16 2008 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

What was your first job?

Picking blueberries.

What did you get paid?

$1.50 per kilogram, blueberries are not very heavy!

Are you a saver or a spender?

Saver, I live so well within my means it is ridiculous.

How do you save?

First I work hard, and then I spend wisely.

What was your worst purchase?

Probably Telstra shares when they first went public.

Credit cards are: a) great b) helpful c) a poor investment d) work of the devil

For me b).

Why?

Because I only use it when I need it - like at the airport when the airline stuffed up my ticket.

Does budgeting work for you?

If I have a huge budget - yes!

What's the best piece of investment advice you have heard?

Get a good accountant, somebody told me that when I was 17. I am glad I listened.

What's the best piece of investment advice you have actually acted upon?

See above.

If I was given $20,000 I would buy ...

Myself some karma by giving the money to charity, or if I deserved the money more, some shares in resources.

If I was given $20,000 I would invest in ...

Some shares in resources - I really am a sensible, boring investor.
