Price negotiation

Noel Whittaker | July 23 2008 | The Sydney Morning Herald & The Age (subscribe)

Is it acceptable in Australia to negotiate a purchase price on a property?

Q.

I'm a first time home buyer originally from the UK. Is it acceptable in Australia to negotiate a purchase price on a property - or do I offer the asking price straight away?

A.

In Australia it is traditional to bargain hard, which is why you really need to spend time researching the market so you will know a bargain when you see one. Also, it is important to understand why the vendor is selling, because this will give you valuable information to help you couch an appropriate offer.
